The Right Mentality for Wedding Weight Loss

Trying to lose weight when preparing for a wedding is one of the hardest things to do. You may need to shed a few pounds to fit more comfortably into your vintage gown, or just want to look better on your wedding day. Whatever the reason, it is possible to lose weight before your wedding day if you plan accordingly.

The first step is to figure out how much weight you want to lose. If you need to lose 10-20 pounds, you should allow yourself at least 4-6 weeks. 1-2 pounds of fat loss per week is safe; any more than that and you will be losing muscle, which is bad. By knowing exactly how much you need to lose and setting a weight loss goal according to that, you’ll be able to plan a realistic goal and not set yourself up for failure.

The second thing to think about is what you can do to improve your diet. Rather than counting calories and taking note of every single thing you put into your mouth, think in more general terms. Do you drink alcohol? If so, cut back on drinks and eliminate 200-300 calories easily. Or if you find yourself reaching for chocolate when the stress of wedding preparations hits you, try to relax and take a bath, read a book, or better yet – exercise, instead. Substitute healthier foods (a whole wheat turkey sandwich instead of a hamburger for lunch, for example), and do your best not to overindulge.

Thirdly, you’ll need a solid exercise plan to lose weight for your wedding. Again, you don’t have to overdo it here. Just try to incorporate 20-30 minutes of vigorous exercise 5-6 days a week, and work in some strength training and stretching 2-3 days per week. Even just a little physical activity, done regularly, can improve your mood, help you deal with stress, and of course help with weight loss, too.

The most important thing to remember is not to try to push yourself too hard. Don’t starve yourself or slave away on the treadmill for hours on end. You need to be healthy and strong for your wedding day so you can look and feel your best.
